Gallstones Surgery

You went into the doctor for the sharp pain you were experiencing. Little did you know your Doctor was going to tell you that removing your Gallbladder was going to be necessary. Somehow these tiny stone like objects were going to cost you a part of your body. If your like me the thought of removing an organ, no matter which one it might be, is appalling.

The fact is gallstones surgery is the preferred treatment among doctors. This involves removing the gallbladder. For those of you who don’t know the gallbladder aids in fat digestion and concentrates bile from the liver. It basically stores the bile and excretes it during meal times. Many sources say the body can easily do without this organ. My first thought is that every part of our bodies serves a purpose. It was put there for a reason and I want it to stay there. In fact without the gallbladder bile basically drips all day long instead of just during meal times. It can drip into the digestive system. This can cause diarrhea.

There are two main types of gallstones removal surgery that may be used.

The most common is Laparoscopic. In this case server small incisions are put into the abdomen. The doctor then inflates the abdomen in order to create more visibility. A lighted scope containing a small camera known as a laparoscope is inserted in through a hole in the belly button. The other incisions are used to insert surgical instruments and remove the gallbladder. This surgery takes a couple of hours to complete and recovery usually only takes a couple of weeks.

The second form of surgery for gallstones is an open procedure. This as you may gather involves making one large incision. It is used when Laparoscopic surgery is not an option or when complications occur during a non-invasive procedure.

One thing to consider is the side effects that you will experience after surgery. What takes place and how long will the effects last. Loss of appetite and some nausea may occur. The gas used to inflate the abdomen will have lingering effects of shoulder pain for 1 to 3 days. The muscles may ache throughout your body. This is caused by the anesthesia they use to put you under. Any thing that is not normal for your body to experience can have an affect. Also as stated before diarrhea may occur. Gallstones surgery recovery times vary. The Laparoscopic takes about a week and the open surgery four to six weeks.

How you proceed at this point is something to discuss with your doctor. If you feel that you need even more information then continue reading below.
